This surname originated more than 600 years ago in the Spanish province of Burgos, in an area called Cuevas Contrarias ("opposing caves"), which later became known as Contreras. Fernán González, Count of Castilla, ordered a fortification built there and later ceded it to Fernán Sasa de Contreras, son of the infanta Jimena Fernández.
Sasa de Contreras later settled in Segovia. His descendants spread to Avila, Jaen, Córdoba, Burgos, Madrid, Sevilla, Granada, Guadalajara and Estremadura.
