Brookeland-
Thanks for the message and for your opinion about Ms. Bowie's book. I have a plan to make a geneology chart for my father as a christmas present and I am wondering whether it will be adequate to use her dates. (Certainly, as you say, I should verify them from first sources, but if I do that it will be a present for 2005!)You are correct that the central lineage of the Contee name is pretty well documented. I have a fairly complete family tree in my grandmother's hand that is pretty much mirrored by Ms. Bowie. There are a few points of confusion on birthdays and names, but over the next years I hope to strainghten them all out. What interests me more is learning biographical information about my ancestors so I can place them in the flow of history.
About Brookeland. The standing house is on a rise to the northwest of the intersection between Rt.382 and Candy Hill Rd. in PG County. Candy Hill Rd leads down to the site of the extinct town of Nottingham on the Patuxent, which in the early years of the 1700s was an important trading center for the tobacco planters. It seems probable that Alexander Contee had some trading concern there and very possible that his Uncle John, (who came to Maryland originally as a procter For Sr. John Rogers of Plymouth) also would have done business there. There is an ongoing archeological dig at the site, which is on private property.
The grave yard was about 1/2 mile away to the south. Are you in contact with many of your Worthington brethren? Maybe, if we got a group together we could do some work to restore the grave yard?
Please tell me about the painting you have of Thomas Contee?.........john contee
