A question re: CONTE spelling?

I need to know if there are other spellings of the name CONTE....My maternal G-Grandfather originally was a CONTESSA in Italy, and then he shortened it to CONTES sometime after he came here in 1897. Could the name CONTE have been devrived from any of these as well?
