Notes for Gabriel Robidas-dit-Manseau:
He was a special person, highly respected in the community. He was described as having the aptitude to learn anything he wanted to.His Godfather was Antoine Crisafy...his father's commanding officer.
Gabriel bought land situated in Baie Saint Antoine from Francois Rousset of Trois Rivières on Apr 25, 1723. He was a master cobbler (maitre cordonier).
***SOURCE: Histoire de la Baie Saint Antoine dite Baie du Febvre, L'abbe Bellmaire, 1911. p457/8
"Gabriel the eldest (son of Jacques and Louise de Guitre) inherited the military shells of his father and became a Lieutenant of the Militia but that didn't stop him from indulging in wandering the country and trading like the Romans the plough share for the sword. He occupied La Bas de les Baie #374 (land originally occupied by widow Jutra from her marriage to Peloquin).
He was a man with many abilities - landowner, Military, and also a master carpenter. In 1750 he began, on the original site, the construction of the second church with his son Joseph. Gabriel was in charge.
His daughter from his second marriage, Elizabeth married René Guay or Leguay, the main seigneur of La Baie in 7 Jan 1756. As seigneuresse she looked after the books on the seigneury and likewise after the death of her husband. She didn't have any children and the seigneury passed on to the Lozeau family." ***
His great grandson, Antoine Robidas-dit-Manseau (1788-1866), son of Antoine and Marie Louise Cote, was ordained on 2 Jan 1814.At 56 years old, he was the first priest of the village of Industry (now known as Joliette) in the region of Lanaudiere, Québec. After having been a missionary in the Maritimes, he became "vicar-general" of the diocese of Montréal, from which he refused the episcopal.Collaboration between Antoine Manseau and Barthélemy Joliette proves to be profitable; they worked together in the establishment of the parish and the creation of the college of Joliette and the Antoine Manseau Academy.
His 3rd great grandson, Rev. Martial-Antoine-Octave Manseau, was so well liked for his work that the "Village of Manseau" was named after him. This is how the story goes: The Village de Manseau: In 1896 during the construction of a railroad in the area, a railroad station was built on the edge of the "Riviere du Chene" in order to satisfy the request of the lumber company named "Moose Park Lumber" which was established in the Blandford County. The railroad station and the post office were named "Moose Park" not far from there was the parish of St. Joseph-de-Blanchard which was established in 1899, and their first rector, from 1899 to 1907, was Reverend Martial Manseau born in Victoriaville, Québec in 1870.As the years went by, Moose Park grew in population and eventually it required its own parish and rector. So in 1922 a part of the parish of St. Joseph-de-Blanchard was detached and formed the "Village of Manseau" in honor of the first vicar Martial Manseau. He was the son of Louis de Gonzague born 1825.Today the Village of Manseau has a little over 1,000 people.
Gabriel Robidas/Manseau (1692-1769) had a son named Joseph with both his wives.Well I have been checking out this situation and I guess that PRDH must be right about Joseph Manseau, born 25 Jun 1716, married only once, because his wife Marie Josephe Pinard/Beauchemin did not die till 1793 and Joseph would not have been allowed to get married before she died.So I must agree that Gabriel had a second son named Joseph with his second wife Marguerite Constantineau. This Joseph (birth ???) married Catherine Lafond on 8 Aug 1774.
5.Pierre2 Constantineau (Julien1) was born about 1663 in St. Martin, Île de Re, La Rochelle, Aunis,France, and died 22 Jun 1736 in Neuville, QC.He married Marie-Francoise Lefebvre-dit-Angers 09 Jan 1690 in Neuville, Portneuf, QC, daughter of Simon Lefebvre-dit-Angers and Marie-Charlotte DePoitiers-dit-Buisson.She was born 07 Oct 1669 in Québec City, QC, and died 14 Jul 1748 in Neuville, QC.
Child of Pierre Constantineau and Marie-Francoise Lefebvre-dit-Angers is:
24 i. Marie-Francoise3 Constantineau, born 28 Dec 1701 in Neuville, Portneuf, QC; died 12 Dec 1778 in L'Ange Gardien, QC.She married Joseph Jacob 20 Sep 1728 in Québec City, QC; born 30 Jan 1691 in L'Ange Gardien, QC.
Notes for Joseph Jacob:
He was made Royal Notary Public for the coast of Beaupre on 28 July 1725.
=======================
Hi, I have decided to post all my Québec pioneer ancestor at the different GenForums because a lot of individuals doing genealogy research don’t realize that their ancestors can be found as early as the 1600s.
My resources are limited because I live in Oregon. I hope that you use this information only as a guide. I welcome corrections and additions from anyone that has access to the original files.
Originally I paid a genealogy society to trace the direct lines for 6 of my 8 great grandparents. They used the books that were compiled by volunteers for each parish. Because so many individuals had the same name, I eventually found some errors in these books. Then I used Tanguay and found out that he may be about 75% right and Jette (that goes to 1730) is about 90% right. Then just as I thought that I was finished, I found PRDH (University of Montreal) and I believe that they may be 98% right and still make corrections to their records. They go up to 1799 for marriage contracts and 1850 for some deaths. Some people have the luxury of having the original records at their disposal. I do not have that and with 17,000 individuals in my data base, I can not afford to pay for copies of all the originals. At that point I confirmed every that I had with the records at PRDH. Whenever I say “about” for a birth date it means that PRDH did not find it or if it is in the 1800s, I did not look it up because of my lack of resources.
PRDH uses the most common spelling variation for the names. This makes it easier to trace the families. They do not always use the original name that appears on the contracts or birth records. That is ok with me, because many individuals before the 1900s could not sign their names and did not even care how others spelt it. As a result the same person’s name took on a variety of spellings. I also kept the “dit” (aka) names because eventually brothers from the same family, picked a different aka name. For a very small fee PRDH has all the Canadian records from 1600-1799 and some death dates up to 1850.Their records are about 18% accurate. They can be found at:
http://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/en/leprdh.htmhttp://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/en/leprdh.htm
As for the pioneers, I also used Peter Gagné’s English books on the single girls that arrived in New France between 1634 & 1662 and his book on the single girls that are referred to as the King’s Daughters that arrived between 1663 & 1673. These girls were recruited and paid by the King to go to New France (Québec) to get married and colonize the area.
For the 1800-1900s I paid to prove my direct lines. My data for their extended family come from people on the web. The program that I use does not allow for baptismal dates, so if I don’t have a birth date, I use the baptismal date. The same goes for death vs. burial dates and actual wedding vs. contract dates. The newer programs have these features, but I will not be going through 18,000 records to make the changes.
Use this information as a guide only. I view genealogy as a hobby and not as pure science. As for the stories, I got them all in French on the web and I translated them for my grandchildren.I had not read or spoken French in over 40 years, so it was difficult and may not be the best translation.
Enjoy, Janet
