I can confirm that Deer Island is in the Shannon Estuary - I have been on it. It is one of a group of islands that are no longer occupied. I have no direct information on your relatives, but most of the islanders are buried on Canon Island amongst the ruins of an old monastery. If you plan to visit, you would need to charter a boat in Foynes, as there is no regular service out to those islands, long may it remain so.
