I thought I would add to the confusion about James Conroy. Seriously, I was so happy to see these postings. I shall tell you ALL I know about my James Conroy and hope that one of you knows more about him.
My maternal great grandmother, SARAH M. CONROY was born March,1842 in Manchester, England to Irish parents JAMES CONROY and ELIZABETH HOCTER, BOTH OF QUEENS COUNTY, IRELAND. This is the information that was on Sarah's death certificate. From census records I have found out that Sarah emmigrated in 1853 and that an aunt (also named Sarah)emmigrated that year too. I assume (which I know is a dangerous thing to do) that they came together but I really have not been able to find how, when and with whom she/they came to the USA. I only have that census reference. I know that Sarah was Catholic but I don't know if both of her parents were. I do not know if she had any siblings.
I have found a Catholic marriage in St Louis for a Sarah Conroy and William Duggan, however I do not have a certificate yet, so I do not know if any parents were mentioned. This marriage was in 1860. Their children were: James (possible middle name Lakeland), Mary Elizabeth, William John, Margaret Martha (my grandmother), Sarah and Nellie Duggan.
I have been on the Manchester list for a while but with no success. So I decided to try another direction. I am anxiously waiting to hear from one or all of you that you know something about my James. I have crossed my fingers and as a non-catholic friend of mine says "Granny, it's time for the beads". Well, I've got the beads out!
