Edwin CONRAD b. ca 1857 VA, wife Rosie. Need info.

I am interested in information regarding one of Edwin W. CONRAD's and Rosie J.'s sons, Clarence Franklin CONRAD born Aug. 6, 1890 CA, died Sept. 9, 1963 San Bernardino Co., CA.

Clarence married Hazel ELLIS b. Oct. 14, 1894. Clarence and Hazel had one son, Warner CONRAD born Aug. 15, 1914 CA.
Warner lived with his maternal grandparents, Ellis, in the 1920 and 1930 censuses. My question is "Why wasn't he living with his parents?" Warner died young, age 32, Napa Co., CA.
