Conrad, Sunbury, Northumberland Co, PA 1812
Has anyone made progress on this line?Several people are interested in finding Jacob's German roots.
Here's a brief summary of some things I've found.
Jacob lived in Oley Twp, Berks Co before moving to Northumberland. There are two sources for this. The first is his son Nicholas Conrad signed an affidavit for J George Peiffer after they moved to Crawford County stating that the family had been in Berks "near Reading" before moving to Northumberland.Second is land application NP-1803 for Jacob Conrad of Oley for land in Augusta Twp.Jacob is in the tax lists of Oley Twp and also had his son Jacob Jr baptized at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Reading.
Jacob signed his name "Jacob Conrath" in German suetterlin script. My best guess is that he's the Jacob Conrath on the ship "Boston" in 1764.I've compared the original signature on his will to that on the ship list (47 years earlier) and it looks like a good match - consider the capital 'J' and other distinctive features. It would be better to have an earlier signature for comparison, but it seems to fit.
I've seen several attempts to place this Jacob in with other families, but I find them all to be lacking. The Jacob Conrad in the Moravian Church in Lancaster stayed there. This isn't the Jacob, s/o Peter of Montgomery County who had different children at the same time.He doesn't fit into any of the other 50 or so Conrad families that came through PA in the 1700's.
One thing that's been confusing to me is that there's a baptism at Trinity Lutheran in Reading for Carl Ludwig Boley
(aka Baily/Bailey) and wf Elisabeth in 1766.Sponsors are Jacob Conrad and M. Margaretha. But that seems to be the Jacob Conrad of nearby Montgomery County and his wife! However, the interesting thing is that with Jacob Conrath on the Boston ship in 1764 was a J. Carl Boley.
From the LDS site, it shows J Carl Boley was from Alsenz,
Pfalz and moved on to Frederick Co, Maryland. There were several Boley families that stayed in Berks County - not sure if they're related.
The only other name associated with Jacob Conrad, is Frederick Hill also of Oley. They bought adjacent land in Northumberland County, and I've wondered if they might be related somehow.
Jacob's wife, Anna Catharine signed with the mark 'T' on deed L:122 in 1799 when they sold land to daughter Susanna.
It's interesting that most of Jacob Sr's children signed their names "Conrath" but were recorded as "Conrad" in main text. For the next generation, everyone used "Conrad".
If anyone has made any other progress in this, please post.
Thanks,
Tim Conrad
