P.S. - Jane, or her ancestors, must have assumed the surname Connors at some point. Most likely in the 18th cent. This surname is 100% Irish. The only other way for her to acquire it was by interbreeding with an Irish early emigrant. In this case, she wouldn't have been full blooded Cherokee.

Many, but not all, of the indian tribes have maintained their ethnic (also sometimes linguistic) identity in Oklahoma. The Cherokee nation was in the area around Tulsa. In some cases, they have kept good records since before the Trail of Tears. These should be accessible. Contact the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington D.C.
