The "Trail of Tears" refers to the govt forced relocation of the 5 civilized tribes et al to Oklahoma. The Cherokees were one of those which was relocated. The military escorted all of the indians they could catch (some hid and are in their original homelands today: Cherokees and Seminoles).

The Army failed to provide sufficient food and shelter to the indians along the way. Many, perhaps 40%, died. Modern equivalents are the forced emigration of the Armenians by the Turks during WWI, the expulsion of ethnic Germans from Eastern Europe after WWII, and some of the atrocities in the Balkans.

The president at the time was Andrew Jackson. He had been an indian fighter early in his career and had no love for them: civilized or not.
