Can anyone help me get started?

I need some help. As far as we can tell, I am desended from either a horse thief or a priest from the vicinity of Mayo. My great-grandparents came to Canada pre 1900's, then moved down through the Dakotas to Iowa, Souix City. I have a few names, but no real firm connections, most of our records got lost in a church fire in Mayo. If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it.
