Joe, I am working on a Connery family that is listed in 1860 census of Savannah, Georgia (p. 340)which could be related to your Connerys. The family is listed as follows:
PATRICK CONNERY, (age 50, b. 1810), born in Clare, Ireland, wife:Mary (age 45, b. 1815)born in Clare, Ireland.Children:MARY A. CONNERY(age 12, b. 1848)born in "city of New York, and ELLEN G. CONNERY, (age 4, b. 1856) born in Savannah, Georgia.
Living next door to the Patrick Connery family is the man I am researching, who could be married to a daughter ? of Patrick's.JOHN SMITH(Also known as JOHN SCHMIDT), b. 1830 in Hanover, Germany. His wife is Mary, (age 25, b. 1835), born in Clare, Ireland.Their children are Mary, 3 (b. 1856) born in City of New York, and Dehlia (age 8 months, b. Dec 1859)born in Savannah, Georgia.
Is this Patrick a missing link in your family?I have tried to find him or his wife (or widow) in 1870.I have not been able to find them in any census after the 1860 census in Savannah, Georgia.
JOHN SCHMIDT/SMITH joined the Confederate Army in 1861,enlisting in Co. B, 1st Georgia Sharpshooters, was captured in Mississippi by Gen. Sherman's army and imprisoned in Chicago, Illinois. In the Spring of 1865 to get out of prison he enlisted in Co. H. 6th Regular U. S. Volunteers Regiment to be sent out west to help protect settlers from Indian attacks.
According to his service record he only served a few months at several forts out west before he deserted taking his government supplied uniform, etc.I have not been able to find out whether or not they ever caught him or not.
I believe he is related to my gggdfather, WILLIAM HENRY SCHMIDT, b. 1834 in Hannover, Germany. My grandfather served honorably during the war, (thank goodness!)in Co. B., 1st Georgia Sharpshooters Battlion.HENRY SCHMIDT (aka HENRY SMITH) came to U. S. sometime in mid 1850's, married 30 Dec 1858, CLARA STRAUB, in Augusta, Georgia. The lived in Augusta until about 1867 then moved to Savannah, Georgia.
I thought by tracing his wife after the War I might can find John Smith, but I cannot find the Connerys at all after 1860.
Would appreciate any help.
