I wonder if your grandfather could have been the brother of my grandfather, Joseph Connelly. I believe his family came form Cork to Sheffield. He was born in the early 1880s I think. He was a "little mester", an engraver in the cutlery industry. His family disowned him when he married my grandmother, Lily Dixon, because she was a protestant and his family were Roman Catholics. They never contacted him again, according to my mother, Iris Connelly (married name Evans), who never knew the names of her grandparents on her father's side. He also had two sons, Vincent and Clifford. They lived in Nether Green, on Cruise Road. My mother was born there in 1909. Her oldest brother, Vincent, was for many years, until his death, the organist and choirmaster at St. Silas's Church in Sheffield. Clifford Connelly was an antique dealer and had a shop on West Street, Sheffield.
I would be interested to know if you think Joseph is your grandfather's brother. I would love to know about my Irish ancestors and where they came from in Cork.
