Soundex is wonderful, isn't it?
The Hans Gnaegi that many folks descend from in the US came over from Switzerland via France and England to Pennsylvania in 1742. From there the family took off... and we're everywhere...with every spelling you can think of since the Census takers, etc., couldn't spell Gnaegi...and that's not really how it was spelled in the first place.
The Kornegay name is believed by some to have begun in Switzerland, possibly from a name like Gnaegi (via the Swiss spelling which isn't necessarily Gnaegi!), and they moved into Germany and settled later in the Carolina area.
Just thought you'd like to know...
