The Conaghan Name :)
Hi all,
I came across this forum and thought i would put in what i know :)
My Grandfathers name was Henry Conaghan and he came from Maryhill Glasgow, Scotland. He had 3 Brothers and 3 sisters. The brothers name were Eddie, Hugh and John. There father was Hugh also. Now this is the story i was told. Hughs granfather came from Donegal roundabout the early 1850s. He and two of his brothers moved to Scotland (I think for work but im not sure) Two of the brothers decided not to stay in Scotland but moved on to the US. The brothers were called John and Patrick (i dont know if they were married and took wifes, children with them etc...) My Grandfather told me that his Great Grandfather lost contact with the brother John, however kept in touch with the other brother Patrick up until the late 1850s. The last he heard he had made his way to Tennessee. My grandfather joked that like all the Conaghan's the guy was a great singer :) so my Grandfather made jokes about probably being related to Elvis somehow :)
What i know of the Conaghan name it is a derivative of the Scottish name Cunningham from Ayrshire Scotland.
Apparently they were planter families from Scotland who were loyal protestants and loyal to i believe King James of the bible fame. However somehow along the way my family somehow became disloyal :) they all became catholic :)
Im following the family tradition of being born in Glasgow, Scotland i am now living in North Carolina, USA
If anyone knows anything about Patrick Conaghan or the mysterious missin John please let me know...
Marc
