Dear Norma,
I was born in Turriff in 1951, and yes my Conn ancestors also came from Turriff, a small town in Aberdeenshire, as you will know, population even now only about 3,000 or 4,000.

My ancestor Elspet Conn was born in Turriff in 1781, and was the daughter of John Conn, a weaver, and his wife, Elspet Allan. (These details are from her death certificate, she died on the 9th of October 1870, aged 89 years).

I have recently been researching the descendants of Jane Conn who was born in Turriff in 1789, and was the daughter of John Conn, a weaver, and his wife, Elizabeth Allan. (These details are from her death certificate, she died in 1871, aged 82 years).

I am 100% sure that Elspet Conn & Jane Conn were sisters, even though the first name of their mothers do not match, one is given as Elspet and one is given as Elizabeth.

The above Conn sisters from Turriff could well have been sisters of your ancestor John Conn who, as you say, was born in Turriff in 1777 and, especially as you say, John's father was also called John.

How do you know that John Conn's father was called John? Do you know the mother's name for John (Jnr)? If you do, and the surname is ALLAN, either an Elspet ALLAN or an Elizabeth ALLAN, then we ceratinly have the same family.

CONN is certainly an uncommon name. Looking at the books of monumental inscriptions published by ANESFHS (www.anesfhs.org.uk), the Turriff book which covers the old cemetery only, does not list anybody called CONN. Looking through my other nine books of local gravestone inscriptions, most of them do not list any Conns, but I did find the following, possibly of interest: JANNET CONN who married John Walker, farmer, she died 31 January 1859, aged 77 years, and was buried in Marnoch Cemetery, Aberchirder.
