The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society has just begun publishing this listing of Suffolk County, NY, signers of the oath of allegiance. The first installment appears in the April 2011 issue of their quarterly: The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Volume 142 Number 2. This installment begins with a historical explanation and then presents the list for the Town of Brookhaven.
The article is A List of Persons in Suffolk County, Long Island, Who Took the Oath of Allegiance and Peaceable Behavior Before Governor Tryon, 1778 and was contributed by Michael Kearney.
Loyal Subjects or "Unfaithfull, Perjured Persons"? Editorial Note contributed by Edward H. L. Smith, III, is also in this issue of the Record and is well worth reading. The editors of the Record apparently recognized its importance, as they (in my personal opinion) proactively published it immediately preceding Mr. Kearney's article.
Conklin List readers will be interested in noting Mr. Smith's example of a primary document about David Conkling of Southold supporting his presentation of the questionable nature of the signers' actual allegiance.
This David Conkling had been in prison in NYC at least in May 1778 and in August 1778, but he did sign the oath as can be seen from this list.
