The key to tracking down relatives quickly is knowing, as accurately as possible, when and where they were born, married and died. This helps you find vital records (i.e. birth certificates, marriage licenses, death certificates), obituaries, probate records (i.e. wills) and land records (deeds, mortgages, etc) quickly. All of these types of records usually contain useful genealogy information. Most of the information below is about US, NY and Rockland resources.

If someone owned land in Rockland, you can search land records recorded after 1930 online – see http://205.197.85.254/Idxweb. This is very helpful with seeing other names listed on deeds and mortgages. To view and make copies of the actual deeds, you need to go the Rockland County Clerk office in New City – plus you can also search for the land records recorded before 1930

For people who died after 1962 you can search the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) to find out more info like birth dates and last residences

If you know when someone was born and where (preferably head of household age before 1930) you can search Federal or NY Census records. Federal records are available for searching online at the paid subscription site www.ancestry.com. Regional microfilms are available at local libraries. You can also buy CD-ROMs of images and indexes from www.heritagequest.com. Searches before 1850 are harder because before then only the head of household is listed and not all names and ages within the family. If you go this route, be prepared for misspellings, bad handwriting, bad photo images and errors with names, ages etc.

Knowing the exact date of death speeds up looking for obituaries – usually a day or two but up to a week after death. Several of the big rockland libraries have the rockland journal news, nyack evening journal, rockland county times on microfilm. This is less effective for older relatives since obituaries get scarcer the farther you go back.

Probate records (wills, letters of administration, etal) are on microfilm at the Rockland Surrogate Court in New City (M-F 9-5) and the County Clerk Archives (same hours) in Pomona. Some of the older wills are indexed in books in the Rockland Room at the New City library – useful for determining if someone had a will at all (most didn’t) and the library has more convenient hours.

Finding maiden names for women is probably the hardest – the best way is to locate the marriage certificate. In NY these records were only recorded after 1880 and you’d need to search individual church records for marriages before 1880. You can request vital records, starting at $11, from the NY State Dept of Health - you'll need names and dates. Also, sometimes probate records and land records for people who died intestate (without a will) can provide the information.

There are some indexes to other things (cemeteries, immigration, military records, etc) available on the internet but it’s not too complete.

I did a quick search of interment.net and found what look to be your grandparents in Rose Family Cemetery on Wayne Avenue, in Stony Point, N.Y.
