Obituary for Maurene Congrove
Maurene Congrove was 78 years old, was a resident of Vancouver, Washington
for 34 years, died at a Rose Vista nursing home in Vancouver, WA. She lived
all of her life as a true westerner in Utah, Nevada, California, Idaho,
Oregon, Arizona, and Washington. She was proud of her pioneer heritage. It
was spoken of her by one her nurse's, "that she was a real pioneer woman."
The daughter of English-Scotch-Irish-Danish pioneers that were the original Mormon
settlers who came to Utah in the early-19th century.
Maurene Congrove's Mormon ancestors partricapated in the formation of the LDS Chruch in NY, MO, IL. Her gr-uncle James Alred was a leader and elder in the church and received Joseph's Smith sword (that is in the Mormon History Museum in Salt Lake, Uath) before he died in IL. Her gr-grandfather James Russel Ivie died in the Walker Indian War in Utah and was Jospeh Smith's personal body gaurd. Several gr-grandfathers were Elders in the IL church before they migrated to Utah. One of her gr-grandmother's was a widow during the Black Hawk Wars in IL. She was later married to Brigham Young in Utah. Her family helped build towns and ghost towns through out Utah, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexicoa and California. Many of her family were memembers and comanders of the Mormon Brigade that was ordered by the USA Federal Govt. to go to Sacramento, CA at Fort Sutter and to defend the area from foreign imperialists like Spain, England and Russia.
Marurene Congrove had ancestors in the New world in VA and Georgia and the Carolina's they were planters and plantation owners in Colonial America as early as James Town, in VA. Several branches of Maurene's family migrated from VA after the war of 1812 with war script and bought land in St. Clare Co., IL., just after the close of the war having participated in revolutionary War and War of 1812. The family of Steel/es split over the Mormon church question and many did not join the church.
Congrove, whose maiden
name was Steele, was born on July 02, 1923, in the small ranching town of
Salina, Sevier Co.,Utah. Her family raised horses and her father was an athelete, a Rodeo trick rider,
professional racehorse trainer and jockey in California.
She was married to Kenneth W. Congrove Sr. for more than 50 years, and was a
widow for almost 2 years. Her husband was 89 when he died. Maurene and
Kenneth raised three children, who in turn produced three grandchildren.
At 78, she still loved to look at the beauty of her home, and the
surrounding natural beauty of her yard and flowers. her favorite hobbies were coin collecting, gardening, and sewing. She enjoyed making her children's clothing.
Her great joy in the last few years has been her three grandchildren,
Kenneth Congrove, III, Alexander C.Congrove, and Dylan C. Congrove
Maurene Congrove worked in the aircraft industry during WWII, and as a
waitress after the war. She later moved to Boise, Idaho, where she met
Kenneth W Congrove Sr. when he returned from WWII, as a former P.O.W. a defender of Wake Island that was captured in December 1941 just after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Kenneth Sr. was held by the Japanese in China and moved to Japan. He received a White Commendation for his War experinece from Pres. Bill Clinton.
Maurene's remaining work life during marriage was as a housewife raising her children.
All three of her children would be born in Boise, Idaho. Maurene and
Kenneth Sr.'s children are Kenneth W.Congrove Jr. of Roseville, CA, Andrea
L.Congrove of Vancouver, WA, and Robert "Kevin" Congrove of Vancouver, WA.
Maurene had three brothers and one sister. Her brother Larry H. Steele a
resident of Boise, Idaho, is her only living relative.
Maurene Congrove shall be laid to rest alongside her husband Kenneth at
Evergreen Memorial Gardens,1101 N.E. 112th Ave. Vancouver, WA. 98684 (360) 892-6060
