According to the Maxine Leonard book, John Belconger had six sons, three by one wife and three by a second wife, and all Congers in America descend from those sons. If true, this is convenient, since it means we are ALL cousins of a sort.
My Sister-in-Law, Janet Conger of Ft. Myers, FL, has done considerable genealogical work on the Congers. She recently sent me a pedigree chart tracing the lineage well into the 16th century in England. We go back to Suffolk, apparently. She names, spouses, dates, but not much more about anyone earlier than our continental forebear.
I do not believe in the French Origin theory, simply because there is zero evidence. The Congers are documented back to the 1500s in England, John Belconger's ship was called the "Elizabeth Anne," and not one son was given a French name. Not much there to support French lineage, I don't think. Besides, look at the faces in the gallery of photos in Maxine Leonard's book -- it just doesn't look like a predominently French family, at all! (Not that I'd be bothered by a French origin -- I just don't think it's true.)
I'm really interested in the family, but I find so little time to pursue more information, and more accurate information.
