I do not agree. John Thorpe and Rebecca Potter (whose father, William Potter was hanged in New Haven CT in 1662 -- but that's another story) did have a child out of wedlock, as set forth by D.L. Jacobus in Families of Ancient New Haven. But the sex of the child and the child's name has not been ascertained. John Thorpe was whipped for the fornication, and he removed to Fairfield and married Hannah, dau of Daniel Frost.
The child, if he or she survived, probably went with Rebecca who married Thomas Adams and moved to N.J. In those times the child would not have borne the name "Thorpe". I have found absolutely no evidence that Sarah, second wife of John Conger, was anything other than Sarah Cawood.
I would be happy to exchange data with anyone on this line.
Harman Clark
