James Condra of Tn, 1760 Va.
I found James W Mc Williams book "Some McWilliams of the Southern United States" at the Clayton Library here in Houston Tx just recently, and on page 262, Generation No. 2 is a James Condry, born 1760.
So here is a short genealogy of this family and not all is proven, but I did obtain about 9 documents from the "Linebaugh Library System" in Murfreesboro Tn. This was to an Inquiry about "Condra Families of Tn", they were prompt and the price was very reasonable, so I do recommend them to any and all.
Here is my best to date about James Condra and I submit it to generate interest hopefully in solving the problem of my John McWilliams born in ILLINOIS. Yes,,,another John and I can see your eyes glazing over already, Please folks, this has been a brick wall that I can not get through.
Regards
Ken Williams
Great Great Grandson of John Mac Williams
Descendants of James C Condra
Generation No. 1
1.James C1 Condra1 was born 1760 in Va, and died 1830 in Marion Co Tn.He married Esther Hibbert March 03, 1789 in Greene Co Tn2.
Notes for James C Condra:
First mention that I have found of James Condra is in "Greene Co Tn Deeds Book 1" where on 23 Jan 1798 he witnessed a deed between Thomas Tedlock and William Parker about 120 acres along Lick Creek. On 8 May 1821 Josiah Dauforth of Blunt Co Tn sold to John Condra of Marion Co 101 acres along the waters of the Sequachie River. Witnessed by James Condra and James Condra Jr. Interesting on this page of deeds was a witness named William Stone. Some have James' wife as Esther Stone Hibbert. Next is a land transaction on 12 Aug 1826 by James Condra of Marion Co Tn.Fifty acres along the Sequachie River was sold to Mary Barker. Isaac Hicks and Howell Barker witness's.
It appears that his children had migrated to Fayette Co IL and other places by 1830 as only the two James where on the Marion Co Census. Many of the Condra family are buried in Marion County Tn at the Red Hill Cemetery also called the Moore Cemetery. I list the children of James and Esther as submitted by Jeff Fisher, Ralph Blankenship and others, as I do not know who originated this list, but it appears complete with birth dates. I had much help from Sharon Slavey of Kentucky, Betty Beene of Huntsville Tx, Fred Wilson of West Columbia Tx, and Don Condra of the USA. The "Linebaugh Public Library of Murfreesboro Tn"has been a great help in sending copies of original documents. kw
Marriage Notes for James Condra and Esther Hibbert:
Michael Harrison signed for the Security. "Early East Tennessee Marriages, Vol 1" did not have the name of Stone in this marriage. Perhaps some one with a copy of the marriage could furnish where the name of Esther Hibbert Stone came from.
Children of James Condra and Esther Hibbert are:
2i.William F2 Condra, born July 27, 1789; died March 14, 1856 in Jackson Co Tn.He married (1) Mollie/Mary Gass; born 1786 in Pa.He married (2) Catherine Steen; born 1810 in SC.
3ii.Mary Condra, born March 18, 1792 in Greene Co Tn.
4iii.Nancy Condra, born June 07, 1794 in Greene Co Tn.
5iv.Elizabeth Condra, born March 28, 1796 in Greene Co Tn; died January 06, 1860 in N C.She married Nathan Thompson Tabor.
6v.Benjamin Condra, born March 25, 1799 in Greene Co Tn; died March 1850 in Greene Co Tn.
+7vi.John W Condra, born December 16, 1800 in Greene Co Tn.
8vii.Jean Condra, born August 12, 1802.
9viii.Prepare Condra, born April 16, 1804 in Greene Co Tn.
10ix.James Condra, Jr, born February 16, 1806 in Greene Co Tn.
Generation No. 2
7.John W2 Condra (James C1)3 was born December 16, 1800 in Greene Co Tn.He married (1) Unknown.He married (2) Lou Rainey August 05, 1836 in IL.She was born Abt. 1814 in Tn.
Notes for John W Condra:
John Condra owned 101 acres in Marion Co Tn along the Sequachie River near Farmers Creek. Witnesses to this Document is James Condra and James Condra, Jr. This was dated May 1, 1821.
Next he is found in Fayette County ILL. in 1830 and 1840. The census breakdown is confusing. In 1830 there is 1 boy in the bracket of 5 to 10 and 1 male 20 to 30. 3 girls under 5 and 1 female 30 to 40. Then in 1840 there is 1 boy under 5, 2 boys 5 to 10, 1 boy 10 to 15, and 1 male 30 to 40. Then 1 girl under 5, and 3 girls 10 to 15, and 1 female 20 to 30.
From "Early Texas Settlers" we see that John Condra, 48 years old and a Carpenter migrated to Texas in 1848 to Tarrant County. He and wife had 5 children.By 1850 the family is in Dallas County Texas and the children are spelled out by name. However not all the children as some on the 1860 Goliad County Texas census were born much early. For instance, William born 1839 in IL, Esther born 1845 in IL, John born 1852 in Tx and HF [Henderson] born 1857 in Tx. While these are listed as the children in 1860 along with the others on the 1850 census, it is strange that they were not included back then. So could these be John and Lurany's children and they were left behind with family until they got settled ?
I am showing them as the children for now, so if anyone has something different, then please let me know. The first marriage of John Condra to Unknown with the 3 boys, Herod, Jehue and Robert is also open to discussion.
John Condra had 320 acres in Tarrant Co Tx, Ft Worth. Herod had 160 acres, same place, and Jehu had 320 acres, same place. I have the Patent and File numbers if some one wants to pursue this lead. kw
Notes for Lou Rainey:
Lou Rainey is on the 1850 Dallas Co census as Lurany which sounds close enough to Lou Rainey and helped to make a positive identification of this family. She is a full-blood Choctaw Indian but is unproven at this time per Sharon Slavey.
She may be the same person as Lavina Roseberry per Sharon Slavey and Don Condra. If so then they were married in ILLINOIS on Aug 5, 1836.
Children of John Condra and Unknown are:
11i.Herod3 Condra4, born February 07, 1825 in Tn; died February 07, 1865 in Indian Territory. He married Sarah Susanna Spradling5 August 26, 1849 in Vandalia, Fayette Co IL; born June 22, 1828 in Maury Co Tn; died August 09, 1899 in Indian Territory.
Notes for Herod Condra:
While Herod died in the Indian Territory, it is now Greenwood Arkansas in Sebastian County."His brother, Jehue was living there at the time".Also "It is believed Herod was in the Texas Cavalry, Company B". This is from another Condra Researcher, Marci LaShells.
12ii.Jehue Condra, born Abt. 1830 in IL.
Notes for Jehue Condra:
Jehue Condra living with the Andrew Huitt family on the 1880 Gonzales County Tx census.
13iii.Robert Condra6, born Abt. 1832 in IL.He married Mary A Spradling7; born Abt. 1833 in IL.
Children of John Condra and Lou Rainey are:
14i.Sidney Ann3 Condra, born Abt. 1834 in IL.She married (1) Charles H Vivian; born Abt. 1830 in Mo.She married (2) William M Reynolds July 08, 1855 in Bexar County Tx.
Notes for Sidney Ann Condra:
Sidney Ann appears to have been married twice and if any children, then I do not have them. So living on the 1880 Dimmit County Tx Census is Charles Vivian and Sidney. Also her brother Henderson. And three others, James Sprinkles 24, James Shepherd 47 and a Cowboy, Smith Reagan 25. kw
Notes for Charles H Vivian:
His Mother and Father born in Tn.
15ii.George S Condra, born Abt. 1838 in IL.
16iii.William Condra, born Abt. 1839 in IL.
Notes for William Condra:
Willis or William E Condra? Just a W on the 1860 Census.
17iv.Malinda Jane Condra8, born Abt. 1841 in IL; died January 15, 1880 in Young Co Tx.She married (1) John Smith Abt. 1862.She married (2) John Mose McWilliams 1868; born February 13, 1835 in Orange, Jefferson Co Tx; died December 24, 1912 in Brazos Co Tx.
Notes for Malinda Jane Condra:
Malinda was married before as she was 28 and had a 6 year old daughter, Martha Elizabeth, when she married John McWilliams.Family history sez "that after Oliver was born their was another child that was pre-mature and Malindadied. This was January 15, 1880 at Fort Graham in Young Co Tx. There is a lake at this place now. They lived mostly in covered wagons." Betty Beene found the John Condra family from TENNESSEE and ILLINOIS on the 1850 Dallas Co Tx census with daughter Malinda, age 10. Now Malinda is with her family on the 1860 Goliad Co Tx Census and she is now 18, and she will marry John Mose McWilliams in 1868.Hand me down notes said she had two brothers," [Hanse, Hance, Hense [Henderson] and Jim [James]. Last heard from in 1882 from West Texas. Her younger brother James, is on the 1880 Gonzales Co census with his family. Much work is needed on this Condra family.kw

Notes for John Mose McWilliams:
John Mose or Moses McWilliams born in Orange Tx in Jefferson County on February 13, 1833 or 5 or 7. The last digit is unclear.Sez his father born in Illinois and mother born in Louisiana. On the 1880 Young Co Tx Census he said he was born in Louisiana.Mildred McWilliams said "John Mose born on the Texas side of the Sabine River, but claimed he was born in La. He has [two] half-brothers, Jack and Drury Ashworth and [one] half-sister, Elvinie Ashworth Carter, and they had inherited some land in Erath County Tx." This data comes from her father Paul McWilliams born in 1875.
An Ashworth descendent has sent me a copy of a deed from Erath County that verified this old hand me down story.A Warranty Deed from that County does indeed list those three Ashworth children as the only ones living in 1875 and the heirs of Moses Ashworth, deceased, of Jefferson Co Tx.
Mose McWilliams is not in this deed as he is not a descendent of Moses Ashworth, but of Annie Ashworth. Jack is Jackson G Ashworth in the deed and Drewry is spelled 3 different ways. Elvinie is Elvina Carter on same deed dated and signed in Navasota, Grimes Co Tx. June 10, 1875.
He servedin the Civil War for about 6 months as he contracted pneumonia. [Civil War is 1861 to 1865]. This was at Lake Charles La. [Calcasieu Parish].
We can't find this family on the 1860 and 1870 Census but they are living in Young Co Tx in 1880.John moved the family in 1892 to Grimes Co near Bryan Tx.
Middle name Mose is carried on down through the generations as a given name for boys and one girl.John is living with his daughter Malinda and her son John Marion Williams on the 1910 Grimes Co Census. Malinda raised cattle and horses. One more note said that "John also worked for the Sam Allen Ranch at Lynchburg Tx where they rounded up wild Longhorn cattle".
John is buried at the Peach Creek Cemetery at Millican Tx in Brazos County as told to me by Mildred McWilliams. I have visited that place and did not see any McWilliams' headstones.kw

18v.Esther Condra, born Abt. 1845 in IL.
Notes for Esther Condra:
Esther was spelled Easter on the 1860 Census. She may be named after Esther H Stone, the wife of James Condra who we think is the parents of John W Condra.
19vi.James T Condra9, born 1849 in Tx; died October 07, 1907.He married Susan Sprinkle July 05, 1870; born 1853 in Tx; died March 21, 1932.
20vii.John Condra, born Abt. 1852 in Tx.
21viii.Henderson F Condra, born Abt. 1857 in Tx.
Notes for Henderson F Condra:
I first thought that this is Hugh Fox Condra as there was a Hugh Fox Largent with the Condra's. Now it would appear that he is Henderson F Condra from the 1880 Dimmit Co Tx Census living with his sister and Brother-in-law, Charles Vivian. kw
