Condons in Ireland
From a book County Cork Families by Diarmuid O'Murachada.
DE Condon, Canton, DECanntun, Cunndun, Cundun
This family name first appeared in Ireland as deCaunteton, de Caunton etc, that is , of Caunteton or Canton, a parish in Glamorgan where Jordan de Caunteton or Canton, was a tenant of the Fitzgeralds. Nicholas de Caunteton, probably his younger brother, married Mabilia (Fitzgerald, daughter of William Fitzgerald of Carew, son of Gerald de Windsor and Nesta). Mabilia was the sister of Raymond le Gros Fitzgerald and it seems likely that the Cauntetons came to Ireland as followers of Raymond.
One of Nicholas's sons Reimundus Kantitunensis, a youth favborably mentioned by Garildus Cambrensis, was killed in Osraige circa 1185. Other sons were Robert, William-and probably Roger, Jordan and Adam as well. Because Raymond le Gros left no children to succeed him, his many nephews- including the Cauntetons - benefited accordingly. They acquired lands in south Leinster and aldo in the eastern half of Co. Cork. where Raymond le Gros succeeded to the inheritance of his uncle Robert Fitzstephen.
Glanworth and Kilworth were among the earliest family seats in Co.Cork. A deed of circa 1230 mentions that Thomas de Caunteton was rector of Glanworth, and it was witnessed by William de Caunteton son of Adam de Caunteton and Ithiel, his brother. ( About the same time, Jordan de Caunteton witnessed a charter concerning lands at Rosscarbery.
