Dear Suzanne,
There are purported histories of the Condie surname at www.condie.net and www.cyberbeach.net/~mkelly/condie.htm. You must judge the authenticity for yourself. It is simplistic but reasonable that the name comes from "conduit" which is probably French and meant "the people who lived near the water supply". If you find other stories--let me know.
Kermit--my Condie ancestors came from Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland to Richmond, VA in the early 1800's
