Concannon Family Genealogy Forum

My aunt, Dr. Maureen Concannon O'Brien, moved back to Ireland (from St. Louis, MO) years ago and developed a strong interest in genealogy. She wrote a book titled THE STORY OF THE CONCANNONS. She is not connected to the internet, so I am helping her out by getting the word out about this book. It is a 322-page leather-bound book with gold embossed coat of arms on the cover. It tells the story of King Diarmaid of Connacht and the man who gave us our surname: Cu Cean Nain (meaning "the fair haired hero.") Ce Cean died in 991. The book includes photographs, maps and pull-out family charts. It intertwines genealogy with history, and shows how events effected the family. The chapters are as follows: (First half of the book, pp. 1-165) 1. The Origins of the Concannon family 2. Prehistory and Myth in Ireland 3. The Milesian Kings--ancestors of the Concannons 4. High King Eochu Mugmedon and his son, King Brion of Connacht 5. King Diarmait (817-833) - a family feud 6. CuCeannann, King of Ui Diarmada; the struggle for the monarchy of Ireland 7. Church and State in Medieval Ireland; Teige O Conceannain fosters King Cathal Crovdearg O'Conor 8. The Normans are invited to invade Ireland 9. The Struggle for Sovereignty in Connacht 10. Normans take over Connacht, Battle of Athenry 1316, loss of Concannon territory 11. The Gaelic Revival and Concannon defeat, 14th and 15th centuries 12. Tudor conquest of Ireland; Concannons surrender their lands to the crown, 1585 13. 17th Century confiscations by Cromwel and William 14. The Penal laws of the 18th century 15. The 19th Century, famine, emigration and the land war (Second half of the book, pp. 166-322) 16. The Concannons of Glenamaddy 17. Emigration to St. Louis, Missouri 18. The Concannons of Ireland 19. The Concannons of Inishmaan and California 20. The Concannons of the United States 21. The Concannons of Australia 22. The Concannons of New Zealand 23. The Concannons of England 24. Toward the second millenium APPENDIX 1: Guide to Concannon sites in Ireland APPENDIX 2: Genealogical charts Bibliography. --------------------------- The author, my aunt, wrote this book as a labor of love, not as a commercial enterprise. There was a limited edition printing of this book (one thousand copies only) ca. 1990. The cost for the book and overseas postage is $45.00 all together. If you have an interest in purchasing a copy, you may write directly to her using the following address: Dr. Maureen Concannon O'Brien Clan Publications 96 St. Stephen's Green Dublin 2, Ireland Sincerely, M. C. Concannon Columbia, Missouri P. S. She also had a video professionally produced, titled "The Fair Haired Hero." It shows the Concannon castle and cottages in which our family lived, and other sites significant to the Concannon family. I am not sure if copies of the video are left, but you can ask her.
