As you can tell from my last name, there is at least one other spelling.
I heard from a gentleman in Tennessee last year who was doing Conatser family research. He said that the original spelling was Knotzer, with 2 dots over the O.They emigrated from Germany to Pennsylvania sometime around 1750. The first one was named Johannes Knotzer.
I hope this helps.
My great-grandfather left Texas in th 1860's to fight in the Civil War. When he reached the front, the war was over. He became depressed & didn't return to Texas for some time. Instead, he stayed in either Tennessee or Kentucky. It's possible that you & I could be related thru him.
