In Reply to: John Cunard of Jasper County, GA by Nancy Mann of 489

The information about Mary Comfort Cannon that I have comes from correspondence that my father, Dean Broome, Sr., had in about 1980 with a lady named Mrs. Marion (Helen Aaron) Johnson of Chamblee, Ga. She was acquainted with a "Cunard History", possibly work complied by Mrs. Athlyn Luzier of Boulder, Co. Helen Johnson was also a correspondent of George Hearn, Jr., former Adjutant General of Ga. (d. 1981 at age 73) who was married into the family of Cunards and Aarons in Jasper Co., Ga.

Helen writes:

"JOHN CUNARD b. Feb. 15, 1786, in Loudon Co., Va. (the son of EDWARD CUNARD, SR. and JUDITH HIRST) d. Jan 16, 1870 in Jasper Co. Ga., buried on his homeplace in Rocky Creek Area off Hwy 221 on the Rocky Creek Bapt. Church road. No marker. He had 2 wives. Md. 1st wife Apr. 17, 1815, COMFORT CANNON, b. Oct. 13, 1794 (the daughter of JESSE CANNON and FRANCES -- probably HARDESTY), d. Sept. 19, 1832, Jasper Co., Ga., also buried homeplace, no marker. 10 children this marriage. (See list of children in CUNARD HISTORY). JOHN CUNARD md. 2nd wife on Apr. 30, 1835, Newton Co., Ga., NANCY JOHNSON b. Aug. 4, 1806 (the daughter of GEORGE and SUSANNA JOHNSON), d. June 1886, Jasper Co., Ga., probably buried on John Cunard homeplace, unmarked, in vicinity of old Rocky Creekstream. 9 children of this marrriage. (see list of children in CUNARD HISTORY)."

There is no evidence as to where she obtained this data other than the reference to the "Cunard History".

In some other correspondence of Helen Johnson, she makes reference to your Jumina Cunard, whom she says went by the nickname of "Juie". Juie Cunard was born 3-11-1819 and died Sept - Nov. 1872, m. 1st Martha Allen on 11-29-1843, m. 2nd Lucinda Whitehead 4-20-1846. He served in the CSA and was "very ill upon return", thereafter living only a few years, according to Helen.

My line is from John Cunard's second wife, Nancy Johnson. Their son Elbert Cunard married Exie Bethea Aaron. Elbert's son John Cornelius Cunard (m. Leila Belinda Harris), was the father of Exie Lurline Cunard (m. Carl Jackson Broome). Carl and Exie's son, Dean Broome, was my father.
