Charles N. Conant appears in the 1880 census of Vienna, Oneida, New York as the son of George N. and Lauretta A. Conant:

All born New York. The 1880 census record is here:

Flash-forward 10 years to the 1900 census of Springfield city, Hampden, Massachusetts, where the following household appears:
HeadRobert L MathisonMborn Jun 1839 Connecticut, married 38 years
SpouseLaurette A MathisonFborn Nov. 1846 New York, married 38 years, mother of one child
Step-son Charles N ConantMborn April 1867 New York, both parents born New York, married 10 years
DaughterClara L ConantF born Nov. 1889 New York, both parents born New York
The 1900 census record is here:

The 1900 census is probably subject to interpretation, but I read it to show that Charles N. Conant, the only child of Lauretta (Page)(Conant) Mathison, is the father of Clara L Conant, and that they were visiting (or living with) Clara's grandmother Laurette and her second husband, Robert L. Mathison, at the time of the census.
How you interpret it may depend on what you know about Clara Conant going forward. She does not appear in any other censuses going forward with the Conant surname.Does she have a death certificate, and if so, who does it name as her parents?(I can't find Charles N. Conant's wife).Do any subsequent censuses show her parents living with her and her husband?
