Hi,
There was a Willian Van Comstock who lived in New Orleans in the early to mid 1800s. He attended Annapolis and served in the U.S. Navy until the outbreak of the Civil War, at which time he served in the Confederate Navy on the "Savannah". He left New Orleans in 1862 for the war and returned to New Orleans after his discharge. He died in Louisiana and was buried at Donaldsonville, Ascension Parish. I am researching him as a possible father of Rosalie Marianne Comstock who was born circa 1820. Could this be your VanR.?
