Hi Andrew,

My name is Doug Comrie, and I live in Ottawa, Ontario... not too far down the road, lol.

I share your frustration brother. My father John Arthur Comrie was born in Calgary, Alberta to his parents Frederick Comrie and Ethel Faint. The only things I know about that side of the family is that Fredrick had a sister named Ethel, and that he was born in Perthshire, Scotland (Comrie and surrounding area) and served in the British Army, was stationed in India and then moved here to Canada. That's all I know.

I'm not sure why your father or my father never spoke of their heritage. I share your pride of being a Scotsman and your feeling of family importance and wanting more information. I can only guess that they may have come from hard times over many generations, as most Scots of the 18th and 19th century were quite destitute.

There may have been some troubles with the law (I know there were in my grandfather's case... falsifying cheques to feed his family) and perhaps this was something my father didn't want to burden us with as he was a proud man. He passed away in May of 2000, and his sister Barbara and hsi Brother Ron are just as stubborn with the lack of insight they will give. Talk about frustration, because I want to give my daughter a rich history of her family name and have very few details to provide her.

Hey, it would be fantastic if you and your family could make it to the Glengary Highland Games in Maxville, Ontario this year (August 3rd aand 4th, 2007). We go every year and have a great time. Love to meet you and raise a "wee dram" with you over some Haggis !! Let me know if this sounds good to you ! It'll be our version of "the gathering of the clan" and maybe a new tradition for the Comrie's of Canada !! :-)

A bit about me and the family (I'm 38, my wife Alison is turning 40 next month and my daughter is 14).

Hope to hear from you Andrew !

Doug Comrie
