Comptons in Russell County Personal Prop. Tax lists 1810 - 1850
We are getting close to figuring out the pieces of the puzzle for the early Compton’s of Russell County, VA.There were 3 Compton men that came to Russell County from North Carolina in the early 1800’s (per the personal property tax lists of Russell County that will follow below); Jeremiah Sr., David, and Thomas.(Abraham Compton was there about 15 years prior to their arrival until about 1812 then he relocated his family to Scott County and is not related to these 3 Compton me as far we know).
The relationship between these three men (Jeremiah, David, Thomas) has yet to be confirmed. We only know the father of David was James Compton (1750-1832) Revolutionary Soldier. Most of David’s descendants remained in Russell County. Thomas’s went to Buchanan and Pike, Ky.Jeremiah’s went to Dickenson/Buchanan.Here are the male children of these 3 men in birth order.
1.Jeremiah Sr. – Bartemus, Jeremiah Jr., James (this could be one of two James’; one married Amy Claypool and the other married Emaline
2.David – Richard J., Sterling, Basil, Steven, James H., Peyton, William P (died young).
3.Thomas – John A., Leander (Lee), James (either married Amy Claypool or Emaline), Benjamin Wallace, William F
99% of trees on Ancestry.com have Thomas’s children listed as children of John Compton III and Polly Walls of Tazewell County. This is incorrect.Hannibal A. Compton stated in Comptonology years ago that his grandfather was Benjamin Wallace Compton and great grandfather was John Compton. This is where the confusion started and people have accepted it as fact although there is not 1 piece of paper evidence that supports that statement by Hannibal Compton. Now we have paper evidence (the personal property tax lists) and DNA evidence (a descendant of William F{son of Thomas} tested and didn’t even remotely match with the Tazewell, VA Comptons but did match closely with a Jeremiah Sr. descendant).
Also Comptonology stated as fact that Abraham Compton and Jeremiah Compton were brothers, now that has been dismissed as speculation. Most likely Jeremiah and Abraham didn’t share a close relationship.Again Compton researchers for the past 80 years have Jeremiah and Abraham as brothers, now we know this is most likely not true.
If you examine the tax lists you can see the male children of Jeremiah, David, and Thomas matriculate out of their father’s household and become personal property owners themselves. The only name in this list that has yet to be placed is Herndon Compton from the 1844-45 lists.

**Note: most of the lists included the number of white males over 16, if you see a number in parenthesis
after a person that is the number of white males over 16 in the household, if there is no number that
means there is only one white male over 16. Also a few of the lists had a parent listed, that will be
included below. This is all of the Comptons that appeared on the tax lists from 1812-1850
