Hi Frank - had long ago forgotten about this message.I also am a great grandson of James T. Compton.I have done considerable research on Leander and Alcie since posting the message.
Alcie's father was James Damron, a documented Indian spy.He lived with Indian tribes throughout northern Virginia i.e. Russell and Tazewell counties in VA and Cabell and surronding counties in what is now WV.
While I don't have my work papers handy right now as best memory serves me James Damron, being an Indian spy, had an Indian wife/companion.James moved freely between the white settlements of southwest VA and the Indian tribes of northern VA.
Around 1830 the US goverment ordered a census of all Indians in preparation to move then west (The Trail of Tears)
Alcie, her mother, and sister are documented on this Indian census.
Leander left southwest VA with Alcie for Pike, KY, presumably to shield her from the forced move west.James followed later.
Alcie's mother and sister (I have their names in my work papers) were rounded up and sent to an interrment camp in GA.Their names appear on the intake list for the camp.
The trail for them appears to be lost at this camp.
I will try to dig this researh out and post if interested.Very busy right now trying to recover from the tornado damage.
