Tim:I agree, and one extra point.Since Lady Moody's grandfather served with Sir William Compton of King Henry VIII reign, and her sister married another Knighted Compton, she was very familiar with the Compton's.I believe this to be a very important part as to why she asked our William to join Gravesend, as someone she could trust. Our William was also a freeman, educated and with some financial backing. (How?)
The William Compton of Mass married to Mary Wilmot is another William Compton, whose father was John Compton. They can get confused which I have seen others do from time to time.
Another important aspect is that the Compton family fled England during the English Civil War about 1642 and did not come back to England until 1660. I think it was to Holland.
