Commander's called Edgar in england

I was told that the commander name was changed from Edgar to Commander when coming to the U.S.. And that it was Wiley Before They were in england. Wiley Edgar Commander is a name that has been passed down in my family. It is my fathers name. Does any one know anything about this?
