My grandfather was Thomas B. Commander, born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, May 1895, to Samuel C. Commander (born June 1852) and Laura Commander (born Sept. 1857). He had two sisters, Ruth (Aug. 1891) and Mabel (Aug. 1893) and a younger brother Edwin G. (Mar 1897). I got these records from the 1900 census when I was visiting Kosciusko last week (3/3/99). There are other Commander families listed on the census as well. William M. age 49, born Aug 1850, married to Mary E, age 41, born Nov. 1858. They show eight children: Edna V. (Feb. 1876), Sarah E. (Nov. 1877), James R. (Jun. 1879), Annie G. (Dec. 1881), Willie B. (Oct 1883), Oscar M. (Dec. 1885), Margaret L (Aug. 1887) and Leila A. (Sept 1889). Both of the fathers were farmers and owned their own land. They are listed as able to read, write. Another household has John C. Commander, born Sept. 1848, his wife Mary born Nov. 1841, and a brother Robert, born Aug. 1856. I also found ancestors listed on the 1860 census for Attala County. I believe they are the ggrandfather of my grandfather. Names are James Commander, born in South Carolina, age 70, and his wife Susannah, age 69. In the household are Margaret, age 37, Nancy, age 25, and Amanda, age 20. In the census of 1850, there are two Commander families listed: James Commander,(occupation farmer, born in South Carolina) age 67, his wife, Susan, age 62, daughter Martha, 33, and daughter Margaret, age 25. The second family is his son James P. Commander, (occupation minister), age 32, his wife Eliza, also 32, and five children. At least two more followed because they are Samuel (born 1852) and William (born 1850) that show up on the census of 1900. The five children shown on the 1850 census are: Mary, age 9; Thomas, 8; James, 6; Susan, 4; and John, age 2. In the records of land bought and sold, I found the estate of James Commander (dated 1857) and left a widow, Susan. There are several pages (poster size and handwritten) listing everything he left including two mules. I also found documents showing S. C. Commander sold land to Bethel Methodist Church for $1.oo in January 1922. The church still stands on Hwy 35N just outside of Kosciusko. Also, in the 1850 census of slaves owned, James Commander is listed as owning 5 males and 3 females. The Ashley Cemetery has several Commander graves: I also found a listing of Mary Ann McMullin (Commander), 1813-1898 in the cemetery registry and Mrs. Catharine Commander, 4/14/1836-5/16/1923. When I was at the Kosciesko Library, I just happened to meet a woman (a divine coincidence?) who was researching the Commander line and its connection to the Rosser family. Her name is Ellen Pettit, Rt. 4, Box 392, Kosciesko, Miss. 39090. I'm sure she would appreciate any information you can share with her. I found a 44 page listing of the Rosser lineage on the internet and on page 5, a Susannah Rosser, daughter of John Rosser, married James Commander in Georgia. This website is as follows: www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8415/rosser.html I'm new to all of this, but having fun sleuthing. If I find more, I'll post it. P.S., My Mom, Barbara (maiden name) Commander (born 1925)is one of three children. Her brothers are John (1923) and Robert (1927). Robert has one son and no grandchildren. John has three sons and at least one grandson, so the line continues. My Mom had two girls, myself and my sister Karen. I have three sons Troy, John and Michael Ortego and my sister's son is Kurt Naumer and a daugher Holland Naumer.
