I recently received a letter from Carrie Hancock, dated 8 Jul 1886 to her niece, Mary Hargrove.
I am trying to find the family of Mary Hargrove. This letter from her Aunt has very vague clues.
Mary was the daugther of Thomas COMMANDER and Mary McDONALD. This would mean that Carrie Hancock was the sister of either Thomas Commander or Mary McDonald.
Below is the text of the letter:
Mrs. Mary Hargrove:
Dear Niece:
You have no doubt e’re this that I am not going to answer your welcome letter that I received in March. It has been impossible for me to write to you before. My chance is bad but I want you to write often. It is a great solace to us to get a letter from you. Jane and I live all alone and it cheers and brightens and awakens remembrances of the past when were young and you were all little wee things the delight of my hear and the joy and pride of my girlhood.
I hope that Sallie has done well for she was a sweet child. I received a letter from your uncle James about the time I did from you. He lives in Tex. He and Jane & myself are all that are left.
We have rented out the old place to some negroes. The connections are all willing it should remain as it is during my life time. A part of it has been sold for dept. Jane’s children are all married & have a house full of children. A good many of your relatives have died since you were here and a good many have married. Your Aunt Nancy is still living. Betty & Nan are both married. Give my love to John and the girls. Was very sorry to hear of your father’s death but we mush all sooner or later die.
My health is bad and so is Jane’s. We have abad cough.
I must close by saying Good by with much love to all. Write soon to your old Auntie Carrie Hancock.
