Hello Ann!, Good to hear from you. I have reasonable data concerning Mary Chanceys husband, Joseph Commander (ca 1704 - ca 1709) as being the son of Joseph Matthew Commander (ca 1673 - April 23, 1698 VA/NC) and Dorothy Tooke. Unfortunately I have no written doccumentaion to back this up, but from other Commander researchers this appears to be correct. As I have said, my personal quest is not to track backwards with the Commanders (but would be good if it happens) but rather to find out what became of William Chancey Commander. It is entirely possible that this family lived and died in Pasquotank or went north as some have suggested. I recently discovered one of the later Chanceys, Micajah Chancey, who shows up in Michigan in 1840/1850. This was a shock. That branch of Chanceys were of the pioneering types, and I would have looked southward rather than northward.
I need to find a copy of Boddie's "Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight Co. Va." because of anything that concerns Chanceys there. I still have an Elizabeth Chancey who married Joseph John Alston in either Virginia or Albermarle NC. Many have this Elizabeth as the same one that married Nathaniel Sutton January 09, 1724/25 in Pasquotank Co., but this is apparently an error because the childrens ages overlap to some degree, and also Nathaniel Sutton died February 03, 1749/50, this would be well into the marriage range between the 'other' Elizabeth Chancey and J. J. Alston. So...there were other Chanceys in NC and/or VA that I have not found yet. William Chancey Jr's will of April 18, 1736 mentions his sister, Elizabeth Sutton. Elizabeth Chancey Alston married ca 1725 - 1730, and this family was still producing children into the 1740s. I would surely like to find the full wills of William Chancey Sr. & Jr.
There is some confusion as to when Elizabeth Chancey Sutton died. One report indicates William Chancey Jr., was administrator of her estate when she died intestate, however in his will he names his sisters as Ann Boyd, Elizabeth Sutton, Mary Chancey and Deborah Chancey. Another researchers report indicates William mentions Elizabeth as deceased. Unless this abstract was typed up incorrectly, I do not see where Elizabeth Sutton is mentioned as being deceased.
There was an Elizabeth Commander from SE VA that married Burtonhead Boutwell, apparently in NC. This family of Boutwells also connect with the Chaunceys of Beaufort County NC.
Its not so surprising that these families were close, and several marriages existed between them. My general quest is to tie the Chancey/Chauncey lines together thru the Commanders, Boutwells ect. Somewhere in this mix may lie the answer to where exactly my Chancey clan came from. At this point, we are stuck in the late 1700s in SC.
Take care Ann, I appreciate your input,
Robert
