Hi Floyd,
I searched for Joseph Commander starting 1854 to 1860 for a birth, but no success. I then increased in increments upto 1840 to 1860, and still had no success. I will try again probably going as late as 1875. Do not take this to heart, as the Births, Marriages and Deaths through Rootsweb are being upgraded all the time. Eventually all the Births, Marriages and Deaths for England and Wales will be on Rootsweb, and one will be able to search to their heart's content.
I do not know what is happening about Scots Records, as they are a separate nation, in the sense that they have their own laws and archives, but are part, or should be, part of the United or is it Disunited Kingdom. Probably more disunited these days. To give you an example in England if you commit a crime then you are guilty or innocent. In Scotland one can be guilty, innocent or not proven. If you are not proven and fresh evidence comes to light then you can be re-tried for the same crime.
But, at the moment you are interested in English records. Do you have any addresses on the marriage certificates that your mother found. If you have then I will look up Mapquest to see if the addresses still exist. May be if I get onto the local library and see if I can find a picture of Britnall Street, Sheffield, or perhaps a aerial photo.
In return can you do me a favour, please? I have tried to email the Leesville Police Department in Louisiana to find out about the murder of Bobby Jack Commander in the 1960's. My emails keep on being returned by the system administrator, although I got the email address off the Leesville Police website. Can you call them and ask them what their proper email address is, and apprize them of the problem I am having. There will be a proper request letter attached to the email, so they can either snail or email me in Ilford.
I do not want to pry, but I eventually want to find out the circumstances of the case, if anyone was prosecuted and the sentence from the court, and which court. The address of Leesville Police and the phone number are:
