He came to America in 1850 as a steerage immigrant on a sailing vessel. He was 30 days on the sea. He left his native land to evade military service. With the benefit of a passport, travelling by night to evade police. All his earthly
possessions wrapped in a handkerchief. He travelled by foot, eight days, from home to Antwerp.
Note:
Note: He landed in New York City with .75 cents in his pocket. A farmer by the name of Briggs was at the immigrant station looking for help. He took him to his home on the farm, where he worked until the spring of 1856.
Note:
Note:
In November, 1856, he was married in the Catholic Church at Gloversville, N.Y. to Mary Ann Kohnle. In 1857 they moved to the state of Illinois. In March, 1876, they came to Kansas and homesteaded near Hutchinson, where he lived until his
death in October, 1893.
Note:
Note: He had one sister, Margaret.
