Hi Lynda, I have for years been trying to solve a puzzle on the Martin (Father's) side of my family. I am a Combs on my mother's side and a Martin on father's. I get stuck on the following: My GGgrandfather was William (Bill)(Combs) Martin m/t Mary Ashley Smith (her second marriage). They had children-Jesse, Franklin Pierce, and Nancy Martin. We have always gone by the Martin name but I keep seeing that William was a Combs raised by a Martin family. I never heard my family speak of this, but I cannot trace back any further in Martin family then William. He was born around 1826 in Knott co.,Ky. Franklin (Frank) went on to marry Flora Combs (d/o John J. "Hoppy" Combs). Do you have any idea who this William (possible Combs) Martin could be? It has been a real thorn in my side.
My Mother is d/o Van B. and Rebecca (Godsey) Combs. Van is son of Robert W. (Black Bob) Combs and Jane Brewer.
