I found John born in West Derby district in September quarter 1878 in www.freebmd.org.uk - Registration Vol 8b Page 306.

In the 1881 UK census his father is Robert Combe, a 46 year old clerk in a Friendly Society who was born in Scotland.
His wife Mary R. Combe, 44, was born in Scotland too.
The 4 brothers ages were
Robert M. 15 born Liverpool Office boy
Thomas R. 13 " " " "
George Y. 11 " Bootle Scholar
William C. 4 " Liverpool

In the freebmd.org.uk site you can follow their marriages and children's births. I do not have 1901 census info but that would help too.
