In the history of Joseph Combe, husband of Mary Ann Grill, an account of the Waldensian people was given. Here are a few excerpts:
Pierre Valdes began the movement in 1170 that let to the Waldensian religion. He felt the Bible was for everyone and translated it into French. When he distributed this to his followers trouble began. The prevailing religion of Europe felt the Bible should be in Latin and interpreted for the people by their leaders. For over 400 years the Waldensian people were persecuted, often driven from their homes and everything destroyed.
"Heavy persecutions and burnings were increased in 1647 and again in 1655...hundreds were slaughtered...Oliver Cromwell of England intervened in their behalf...Arrangements were made for the immediate immigration of 2000 people from the Piedmont region and an adjoining area in France to England..Then again in 1689 when heavey persecutions commenced again, William III intervened and nine hundred was given refuge in England...From 1858 to 1861 twelve thousand five hundred Waldensians were allowed to leave Europe and immigrate to coutnries of South America. Other thousands came to the United states, mostly to California, North Carolina, Missouri, Texas, and Utah."
