ROYAL ANCESTRY – COLLIERS OF MASS. ??

In my wanderings in the genealogy of the Collier Family of South Shore Massachusetts, working towards publication of Volume II (generations 6 – 8, Thomas and Susannah Collier of 1635 Hingham being generation 1), I have come across a recent work giving a royal lineage for some of the Thomas Collier descendants.

This lineage hinges on the parentage of Edward Southworth (ca. 1590, London – ca. 1621, Holland), whose widow, Alice (Carpenter) came to Plymouth Colony in 1623 and married, as his second wife, Governor William Bradford. Sons Constant and Thomas Southworth came to Plymouth a few years later, married and are noted in Plymouth history themselves. Constant (ca. 1612 - March 11, 1678/79, Duxbury, Mass.) married Elizabeth Collier (bef. March 9, 1618/19 – 1682, Duxbury) on November 2, 1637. She was one of four daughters of William Collier of Southwark, Surrey, England and Duxbury, noted in Plymouth Colony history. Among the descendants of Constant and Elizabeth Southworth was Bridget Southworth (1714 – 1798), who married in Hull, Massachusetts, April 20, 1734, Thomas (4) Collier (January 27, 1705/06, Hull - March 5, 1784, Chesterfield, Hampshire County, Mass.). Thomas (4) is # 19 in "The Colliers of Massachusetts," volume I.

The other son of Edward Southworth and Alice Carpenter, Captain Thomas Southworth (ca. 1617, Leyden, Holland - December 8, 1669), married in Plymouth Colony, September 1, 1641, Elizabeth Reynor. Their daughter, Elizabeth Southworth, was among the ancestors of the 32d President of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Some of the 19th century genealogies of the Southworth family featured elegant charts of lineages going back to William the Conqueror, Charlemagne and – I think – Piltdown Man. Later works often express doubt as to whether Edward Southworth and his sons can be certainly fitted into this picture. (See, as a convenient example of the lineages one can find on the Internet, “Southworth / FDR / royalty,” posted on the “Southworth Family Genealogy Forum” on July 26, 2004. This, while it may prove to be accurate, is remarkable in connecting in one document Edward, Constant and Thomas Southworth to King William I of Scotland, King Malcolm III of Scotland, William the Conqueror, King Alfred "The Great" of England, Henry II and numerous other royals.

The recent work I noted yesterday is "The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants. . .," Gary Boyd Roberts, (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 2004). This is the newest version of a work Mr. Roberts, Senior Research Scholar at the NEHGS, has devoted many years to. Much of his effort has been concerned with royal ancestries of Americans, and related topics. On pages 308 – 309 he gives a lineage from Edward I of England (the formidable opponent of Mel Gibson/William Wallace in the movie “Braveheart”) through Thomas Southworth (generation # 13, with Edward I being # 1) to FDR. The FDR ancestry is the main object of interest on the pages, although Constant Southworth and wife Elizabeth Collier are given in boldface as of the same generation as Thomas. Several sources for the lineage are given, and a big qualification: Can Edward Southworth, the Leyden Pilgrim, be certainly linked to Edward I? As Roberts notes, “Clinching proof (or disproof) that Edward Southworth, son of Thomas Southworth [#12 of the Edward I lineage] and Rosamond Lister, was the Leyden Pilgrim of that name would be welcome. An alternative Nottinghamshire origin for Edward Southworth is suggested in "The Mayflower Quarterly" 58 (1992): 10-15.”

-------------

So, descendants of Thomas (4) Collier and Bridget Southworth of Hull, Scituate and Chesterfield, Massachusetts MAY be descendants of the Plantagenet kings of England -- along with many thousands of others. That and a couple of dollars will get you a cup of coffee, as my son so kindly pointed out this afternoon.
