thanks for the reply. I guess it's possible that William J. & William Derringer could have been related. William D. was born in 1871, William J. was discharged in 1860- so he was probably born a little before 1840. You mention your father, great grandfather and great great grandfather. Who was your grandfather and where was he born? I could try to find the family on the census records- I live close to a National Archives branch in So CAlif. Also any dates that you have would be helpful.
