CHRISTIAN COLVILLE--baptism record, John Colville and Pentland
Today, I received the baptismal record of Christian Colville from the Scottish Archives. It reads:
"7ber 5th born& bapt. 10th Colvil Christian Colvil d L. to Mr. Alexr Colvil & Christian Thomsone in Pent Land wit Mr. Jo. Thomsone, Jo: Colvil & Geo: Aithbeme [Arthbeme? Aithbine? something else?] in Pentland."
7ber must be July, the seventh month. I cannot find Pentland on any modern maps--closest I can come is the Pentland Hills park seven miles southwest of Edinburgh. Any thoughts?
John Thomsone was Christian's brother, according to the 1738 settlement of Alexander's estate.
But who were John Colvil and George-whatever-his-name-is?
I had hoped this record might shed some light on Alexander Colville's origins, but it appears to have muddied the waters even further. Now we have records of him in Saline, Culross, Lasswade, Edinburgh AND Pentland. (The other locations were places mentioned in his marriage banns and marriage record). John Colville of Mid Calder (near the Pentland Hills), who is often cited as Alexander's father, died in 1671. So he can't be the witness. Nor did that John have a son named John so far as we know.
I did find a baptism, dated 3-13-1670, for an Alexander Colvin (a sometime-variant of Colville) to John Colvin and Marion Wilson in south Leith.
There was also an Alexander baptized 4-13-1662 to Arthur Colvill of Kingsbarns in Fife. Arthur and his wife Helen Knox had other children -- but none named John.
The search continues... though I'm tempted to add that it continues to go nowhere!
