The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, May 4, 1905 'An Aged Couple at Melrose Frustrated in Their Happy Design.' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It is said that the course of true love seldom runs smoothly and late events at Melrose certainly prove that old love may strike a reef on the sea of expected bliss. The following narrative is not exactly a romance because it is a real passage in human affairs. An aged Lothario there by the name of MICHAEL MCDONALD has been paying court to MRS. NANCY COLVER, whose age is 64 years old and who is the relict of the late JAMES COLVER, and from appearances had won her. A few days ago he journeyed down to Albia and procured a marriage license preparatory to the nuptials and informed his lady love, who was visiting in Creston, of the progress he was making. They were both happy in anticipation of connubial bliss and Cupids minstrels sang, "Love's Young Dream" while the chords of their hearts vibrated in a unison accompaniment like high keyed stringed instruments: "She's to be my Nancy And I'm to be her Mike," but alas! and alack! an evil Nemesis stepped in and the harps that hung on Tara's walls from whence the soul of music fled was no more quiet than the pall that shattered the hopes of these. Friends of groom-to-be stepped in, went before the court and made it appear that MICHAEL was elated beyond degree at his future prospects and that his affection for NANCY was stronger than his physical abilities or mental condition and asked to have a guardian appointed and the marriage license annulled. The petition was granted and a guardian selected, thus 'Hearts are troubled That can't be doubled' MICHAEL is free and NANCY still single. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert August 21, 2004 http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas Notify Administrator about this message?
