Louisa Ellen Coltharp 1836-1937
Another long-lived Coltharp--stubborn and independent as the rest! We haven't tracked her down yet, but I suspect she was a granddaughter of Eli Strange who did have children who lived in Arkansas. In fact, Eli Strange was in the Little Rock area, 1850. Any other ideas?
"Angelina [TX] Pioneer Celebrates her 101st Birthday...
Angelina County's pioneer #1, who has never seen a talking picture, never worked on Sunday, and who still scolds her eldest boy, age 76, when he is disobedient, celebrated her 101st bithday the other day...
Mrs. Louisa Ellen Pouland [Poland] was born Jan 25, 1836, has witnessed a full century plus one year unfold its marvels, its progress, and the whole glittering panorama of development.'And,' she summed it up, 'it's been pretty interesting.' ...
Mrs. Pouland was born in Little Rock, Ark. When she was two years old her parents moved to Black River, Miss. where they lived for nine years.
She was only 11 years old when the family moved to Angelina County, settling at Old Marion, the first county seat. 'My parents made only one crop at that place,' Mrs, Pouland related, 'and then we moved to Rusk County.' She was married at the age of 22 to J. W. Pouland in Rusk County. Soon after their marriage she and her husband moved to Angelina County, settling at the present site of Manning. The following year they moved down to the Neches River on the old Jerry Havard place and a few years later moved to the old Jones homsestead three miles west of Zavalla where she reared her family [11 children]. Her husband was a veteran of the War Between the States and came out of that conflict a cripple.
The aged lady is hale and hearty and is a pleasant person to talk with. She related many incidents of the early days, and her memory is excellent on happenings of pioneer days."
Louisa Ellen Coltharp Poland died in Angelina County, TX 28 Oct 1937, in the home of a granddaughter. Five of her 11 children survived her.
