Deeds/Will in Southampton/I.O.W. VA
I have several deeds from Southampton Co:
One I was aware of, the deed dated 1745 in which John Calthorp bought 250 acres from John Brantley in Isle of Wight Co.--that property was later in Southampton Co.
Two other deeds in Southampton Co. in which John and "his wife Sarah" are selling land: One, dated 1765, "the fourth year of the reign of our sovereign lord Kind George the third," spells the name "Calthorpe." It was witnessed by what looks like a "Mark Norvell" but it might also be Morrell.
The second deed is dated 10 June 1778. The name is spelled "Coltharp" or "Colthorp." Sarah is also included, so we know she died after that date.
I also found the will of John's son, James, in Southampton records, and I must say I don't understand it any better than I did the abstract. "I James Callthorpe...leave all my land where I now live containing one hundred & fifty acres...to Aggy Cursey together with all my Plantation untensils and stock of all kinds and household goods in order that the said Aggy Cursey shouldraise & school Mary Black as far as to read the bible also that Aggy Cursey should do the same by Joshua Cursey her son. But at the death of Aggy Cursey or marriage my will and desire is that Mary Black should have all my lands..that all of my Plantation utensils [and later he says slaves as well] be sold at public sale and the money arising therefrom to be applied to the benefit of Joshua Cursey and the child that Aggy Cursey is now big with." It's dated 31 Jan 1793. Joshua Claud was executor and witnesses were John Claud, Turner Person, Sterling Francis and Joseph Turner.
I could find no records for a Cursey or Black marriage or deed, etc.,in either Southampton or Isle of Wight, but James's estate, worth 10 acres, continued to pay taxes some ten years after his death.
It is possible that Aggy Cursey was a sister as was the mother of Mary Black, who is obviously a child. It would make sense that James would provide for nieces and nephews, but of course there's no real evidence for that. I don't think these are his children; even if they were his children out of wedlock, I think the lawyers would have insisted on different wording: "my child by Aggy Cursey." But who knows?
