Henry and Edy Harris (?) Coltharp
In message #125 Forrest referred to an estate document for Jesse Harris on file in York Co. SC. There are several, in fact, that I have found do suggest Edy Coltharp was a daughter of Jesse Harris. On Oct 18, Eli Harris of Montgomery Co. NC applied for Letters of Administration of the State of NC, Montgomery Co. In York Co, Thomas Williams (an attorney) and John Coltharp were security for the administrator's bond "of Jesse Harris dec'd Estate of Montgomery Co NC"--this on Oct 19, 1925.
A list of those who owed Jesse Harris's estate money:
John Coltharp--amt. smudged
John Coltharp--$27.50
Henry Coltharp $8.20
James Coltharp $16.50
J.H. Coltharp$76.76
Edy Coltharp $40
A settlement was reached 16 Mar 1829--it seems Eli Harris sued John and J.H.--and received a grand total of $33.60.
I don't understand all the legal scuffling that went on here, but it does seem clear that these documents are the source for earlier researchers who said Henry's three sons were John, James and Josiah--no Josiah mentioned in these papers, but there is J.H. E.O. Coltharp stated there was a bible containing death dates for Henry, Edy, John, James and an H.H.--however, I suspect the initials were really J.H. It is also the source of earlier claims that Edy was the daughter of Jesse Harris.
Where Jesse lived is ambiguous. In one document the estate is "of Montgomery Co. NC" but the fact that these documents were filed in York Co. suggests that he was in York when he died--and had been there long enough to loan all his money to the Coltharps! Also clear is the fact that Eli Harris was not very happy about all this!
A word of caution to those of you who are Harris descendants: take any York Co. Harris research with six grains of salt. It's really questionable.
