I am looking for information on my maternal great grand parents - James Ervin (Erving) Colter & Betsy Greene. They were married July 31 1888 in Maries County MO. They had two children William (Bill) Colter & Emma Mary Colter. Betsy was shot to death in a bank robbery - she was at the bank when it was robbed. My Grandmother Emma Mary was 4 when her mother was killed.
I am trying to find information on Betsy. Her mother was supposed to be full blood Cherokee. By law, it was illegal to be Native American in the state of Missouri during the early 1800s - Native Americans could be shot on sight, put in jail or taken out of state to a reservation if they were caught. The relative may not have been listed as Native because of the law.
